The lack of knowledge of cross-border displacement is a serious problem in our understanding of the societies of South Asia. Millions of people have been affected by cross-border displacement. We know far too little about the displacement, about the lives in exile. This study examines the complex relations between the state and the displaced in the Indian states of West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.
