Summary: This study is based on a survey of 2000 households which have put up their shelter during 1985-1990. Four cities, Burdwan, Cochin, Ghaziabad and Rajkot are covered by the study. It brings together the information collected on different types of sources of housing finance, presents facts on the terms and conditions at which borrowers seek funds from various sources and outlines the constraints faced by different types of borrowers in the housing finance market. It examines the existing policies with special reference to the schemes floated by the National Housing Bank and suggests remedial measures.
