In 2020 A.D., Metropolis is coldly ruled by Joh Fredersen. A small privileged class frolics above ground while the oppressed mass of workers toil below ground. Freder, son of Joh, falls in love with the saintly Maria, a young lower-class woman who preaches secretly to the workers. Metropolis is nearly destroyed when Joh's attempt to use a robot bearing the likeness of Maria backfires and the nihilistic robot incites the workers to violence.
