Summary: A surge in the number and scale of development projects, owing especially to the entry of private players in this sector, has triggered massive displacement of people and made resettlement a critical governance task. Yet, both in policy and practice, the mechanisms that are in place at the moment are grossly inadequate, especially in being able to provide a suitable and sustainable alternative livelihood source.
