Summary: Documentary look at the life of a "guest worker." Film follows for two months the life of Josephine Perera, a Sri Lankan widow who left her three children behind when she went to Greece to work as a housekeeper for an affluent Greek family with a young child. Film follows her as she returns home at Christmas after having been away eight years. Her earnings, the majority of which have been sent home, have allowed her to keep her children in boarding school, buy a bus for her oldest son’s business and put aside money for a dowry for her daughter who wants to marry a man with no prospects. Film explores the problems created in a society that, as an answer to its unemployment problems, encourages its women to live abroad as domestic workers.
